Farol da Barra

This is where Brazil began when Amerigo Vespucci sailed into the bay flying the Portuguese flag sometime around 1500. The farol (lighthouse) stands on the site of a colonial fort built in 1534 whose purpose was to repel possible attack by the English, Dutch and Spanish. This photo was taken on a warm, windy night when it was almost dark.
