Sunken Road, Alma

In 1935, major flooding of the nearby Republican River provided the impetus to build a dam on the river a few miles south of town. Construction of the Harlan County Dam began on August 1, 1946, and was completed in 1952. A new lake was created and covered an old road next to town. It looks like a broken dock and it runs right down into the water, it is a little spooky. I was wandering near the lake on a November evening as the sun was setting and I took this photo. My cousin told me that November sunsets can be spectacular in Alma….
