Seattle Met Waterfront Article

Just a quick post with a couple of recent projects I did for Seattle Met magazine. One is a cover story on the Seattle waterfront called “Eat, Play, and Stay on the Waterfront.“ I contributed the cover shot, photos from some of the locations mentioned in the article, and a cool image made with a fisheye lens from inside the Seattle Great Wheel. I also shot for a day at the amazing Kassie Keith antique showroom which is filled with unique furniture and other rarities.

New video – 2012 Personal Work

I decided to go ahead and start a YouTube channel this year and I just uploaded my first video – a slideshow collection of favorite “personal work” from 2012. And it accompanies a new personal work web gallery in the portfolio section of my website. Why show personal work? I have often been counseled by other successful photographers to show more work of this type – the images I’m shooting on my free time and not for clients. Thanks to Blake Discher for the inspiration and to Calexico for the music. Here it is, thanks for taking a look!

ENR 2012 The Year in Construction Photo Contest Winner

I’m very excited that one on my photos was chosen as a winner in the Engineering News-Record 2012 “The year in Construction” photo contest. It is a photo of a welder inside a pipe taken in Everett, Washington for IMCO General Construction. I was also awarded two runners-up, both images of IMCO projects. Big thanks to the fantastic people at IMCO and to ENR!

Image featured on Microsoft Windows 8 Photos App

I am very excited to announce another successful collaboration with the Microsoft Windows design team. The team wanted a background image for the new Windows 8 photos app. We shot in several locations – and I was hoping the new Seattle Great Wheel would be completed by my deadline so I could shoot there as well. As it turned out, it was operational just in time, and when I went to shoot it the evening skies were especially beautiful. They did end up choosing one of the wheel shots - here is the link to the app in the Microsoft Store.

I also had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with the incredible German artist Marius Bauer on a possible home screen image for Windows 8. He took one of my images that was used for the Windows 7 wallpapers and reworked it in his signature style. In the end it wasn’t chosen, but it was great working with Marius! Marius explains the entire process here on his Behance site.

A quick word of support for my great client DB/CB. Artist extraordinaire Debra Baxter hired me to do some model shots of her unique and highly acclaimed DB/CB jewelry line. Every piece is unique and they make wonderful gifts. Please take a minute to go see Deb’s site, it is really beautiful. New Photography Film – Chasing Ice

I saw the new film “Chasing Ice” the other day, easily a new favorite of mine. It is a documentary about National Geographic photographer James Balog’s quest to document glacial movement with time lapse photography in some of the most extreme environments on the planet. I often found myself exclaiming due to the amazing cinematography and daredevil photography while sometimes having a tear in my eye as well – not the usual documentary fare.

More Europe Images

Thanks to everyone who ordered prints from my Europe trip! I am still editing them, about 8,000 images, wow. And I am very grateful to my friends at Unified Color who have been posting some of my trip photos on the Unified Color Blog and front page. I used their HDR Express software to process these photos.

This first shot of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is a combination of 7 exposures shot from our apartment window at night. It is difficult to see here but there are several thousand people on the far right at an outdoor concert. I always wanted to visit this acclaimed building designed by Frank Gehry and we loved the museum as well, especially the Richard Serra installation. On the lower left you can see the “Maman” spider sculpture by artist Louise_Bourgeoisan and in the reflecting pool at the right is Tall Tree and The Eye by Anish Kapoor.

And… the Louvre! Ever since I went to Paris the first time a couple of years ago I wanted to see the I. M. Pei pyramid at the Louvre light up at night. The color version of this shot is on the Unified Color blog but I think I prefer this black and white version. You can get a sense of the scale by looking for the 3 people at the far right tip of the pyramid.
