Kelly Residence in Seattle Met Magazine

I had the great pleasure of shooting a friend’s house and it was just published as a feature in the December issue of Seattle Met magazine. I had an immediate connection with the place and I even stayed longer than usual to do some night photos. Jenny and Gavin commissioned renowned architect Lane Williams of Coop 15 to do a redesign in 2008.

The original house was designed the year I was born (1966) by famed architect Paul Hayden Kirk. Kirk was instrumental in developing a Pacific Northwest regional modern style of architecture during the middle of the 20th century. He was an influence on me because I grew up in one of his houses and, ironically enough, I didn’t even know that this was a Kirk home until I read the article yesterday! I always wanted to photograph a Kirk home and didn’t know that I already had….

Of course, Lane’s amazing redesign is what takes center stage here. When I saw the “before” photos I realized that he had worked some architecture miracles.

Amazing new camera!

This is the first shot I took with my incredible new camera!

It has a super sharp, fast lens and can hold several thousand photos without needing a memory card. The battery lasts all day. It can do the usual tricks – long exposures, multiple exposures, HDR, exposure blending, panoramas and bracketing. It also has thousands of filters, effects and borders within the camera software – no photoshop needed. It has a built-in GPS unit with mapping and I can send the photos anywhere in the world right from the camera – or upload and post to my blog on the fly. The files look great, allowing beautiful prints up to 30 inches, or even larger. No camera bag needed, it weighs just a few ounces and it fits right in my pocket. And – the most incredible thing – it has a built-in phone so when I’m done shooting I can call my Grandma!

Charles Bradley – Bumbershoot 2011

“Soul revival” “Neo-Soul” “Southern Soul” – call it what you wish, Charles Bradley is the real deal. Like a time traveler he comes to us from the way back machine and delivers his powerful funk/soul/R&B mix, laying low all who see him live. When I asked my more musically-inclined friends who to photograph at Bumbershoot this year they all said “Don’t miss Charles Bradley!” He is called “The Screaming Eagle of Soul” for a reason. Of course he blew away all expectations, literally preaching to the crowd, singing, dancing, wailing and crying, pouring out his heart and soul. It was a difficult edit, I couldn’t stand to toss any photos of him!

Eagle Ridge Home – Gary Gladwish Architecture

I recently had the pleasure of photographing this amazing Orcas Island house designed by Gary Gladwish. Even better, Gary just won an AIA Award of Merit for Washington architecture for the project! It was also featured on the Contemporist Blog (full photo gallery) and will be featured in Pacific Northwest Magazine this Spring. Here is his description of the project-

“54 years ago my mother visited Orcas Island for the first time and decided that one day she would live there. 40 years passed before she saw it again and purchased a forested piece of land on a hillside populated with madrone trees, firs, beech, thistle, moss and rocks with magnificent views to the west. Throughout her life rocks, nature and landscape played an important role in her artwork. It was this attraction that convinced her that this was the perfect site for her.

She requested an open, simple, low maintenance design which works with the site in such a way that her views of the island, forest and ledges were always present within the house. Each part of the house was to be designed to accommodate the inevitable bad hips, knees and back. The program consists of a combined kitchen-dining-living area, study, master suite, art studio and storage area.

The solution utilizes some of her favorite materials; old barn wood, rusty steel, moss and rocks. Large doors slide away to open the house to the expansive views, creating a living room in the woods. The entry garden bisects the house creating two zones while it carries the site and the eye out to the view. The 800 s.f. art studio and storage area are left raw to facilitate converting them to additional bedrooms at a later date.”
