Chimayó, New Mexico 87522

…Shukman, 2006 [New York Times]. The last stop on my blog tour of Northern New Mexico is in the small town of Chimayó at the southern end of the High Road to Taos. Founded in the late 1600’s by Spanish settlers, it is home to the “Lourdes of America,” El Santuario de Chimayó. I didn’t expect to be there long but I felt a strong connection once I started exploring the area around the Santurario. There is a hole in the floor in the back of the churc…

Taos, New Mexico 87571

Northern New Mexico is magnificent but in a subtle way, like when you hear a beautiful song and tears well up in your eyes but you can’t say exactly why. Much has been said about Taos – the artists, the skiing, the food, and of course the Taos Pueblo which has been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. When I am there I feel like I went back in time and to a different country, but not to Spain or Mexico. Maybe it is the light, or the people…

New Mexico

Last weekend a “family issue” took me away to New Mexico. It was a difficult trip but I was able to break away for about 2 hours to take some photos. Because of the nature of this trip, some of these photos are very personal and significant to me. This shot was total happenstance- I stopped to aid an injured snake on the road (unfortunately he was a gonner) and saw this amazing scene from the highway overpass. Check out the watchful raven on the…

Picuris Pueblo, New Mexico 87553

…e photos. Luckily the sun poked through tiny cracks in the tumbling clouds a few times and I got some shots. In the end I was chased away by a fierce lightning-laced hail storm but I knew the day’s clouds were a great gift from the weather Gods sent to add drama to my images. Many thanks to the people of the Picuris Pueblo….

Truchas, New Mexico 87578

I have never seen a place like Truchas. Driving down out of the mountains one sees this town laid out on a high ridge just below the high mountain peaks in the near distance. I didn’t have time to stop and explore the many interesting buildings and artist studios but it seemed like a town lost in time. I did stop at the Los Llanitos cemetery on the edge of the road just out of town, what a beautiful spot between the mountains and the sweeping pan…

Apple iPhone iOS 4 brings “New Horizons”

The new iPhone operating system is packed with new features but there is one I discovered which is a game changer for photographers- the new software allows for larger photo file sizes. Now I can send a shot I took with my Nikon to my iPhone and use my incredible collection of photo apps to process the file in ways not possible with my computer. Here is my first try. It is a black and white image of cormorants resting on a dock in Anacortes, WA….
